Cummins Receives EPA 2010 Certification for Heavy-Duty and Midrange Engines

Cummins Inc. received certification from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its 2010 Heavy-Duty big-bore ISX15 and MidRange ISB6.7, ISC8.3 and ISL9 engines. Certification of these engines means that the Cummins 2010 engine lineup for on-highway applications meets the near zero emissions levels required for all engines manufactured in 2010.

The new EPA regulations, which took effect Jan. 1, 2010, are the most stringent emissions regulations in the world, with Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions levels of 0.2 grams and 0.01 grams per brake-horsepower-hour, respectively.

"Receiving the formal certificates is an important step in the process as we enter 2010 with customer-ready products," said Jim Kelly, President, Engine Business. "This confirms that customers can be confident in the technology choice we've made to meet the new, more stringent emissions standards."

Cummins will utilize Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to meet the EPA 2010 near-zero emissions standards. Cummins committed to using SCR technology because of a step change in performance which provides a significant increase in efficiency and durability. "Our decision to use SCR technology has given us the ability to provide customers with the most fuel efficient engines for on-highway applications. We expect to see at least 5 percent fuel economy improvement for the ISX15 and up to 3 percent improvement for the MidRange products," Kelly said.

Cummins EPA 2010 engines will include an enhanced cooled EGR system and a single VGT (TM) Turbocharger. The ISX15, ISL9, and ISC8.3 feature the Cummins XPI fuel system, and the ISB6.7 features an improved High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR)fuel system. The new SCR catalyst is included along with the Cummins Particulate Filter, first introduced in 2007, in the Cummins Aftertreatment System. Incorporating SCR technology will also require the use of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) at an average rate of 2 percent of diesel fuel consumption. DEF is currently available at numerous retail locations throughout the United States and Canada including all Cummins distributor locations.

With the introduction of the new EPA 2010 engines, Cummins maintains engine availability across a broad range of on-highway applications. The Heavy-Duty ISX15 offers fuel economy leadership for the heavy-duty Class 8 truck market along with better performance and better reliability compared to today's industry-leading ISX. And, the MidRange ISB6.7, ISC8.3, and the ISL9 are designed for and available in a wide variety of applications, including the medium-duty truck, school bus, fire and emergency and recreational vehicle markets.

To best serve customers in the vocational and less-than-truckload markets, the Cummins ISX11.9 will be introduced later in 2010. The ISX11.9 is on target for limited production in mid-2010 with full production commencing in late summer of 2010. Cummins will submit necessary documentation for EPA 2010 certification for the ISX11.9 later this year, prior to introduction to the marketplace.

Gentex Rear Camera Display Mirror for the Daihatsu Mira Cocoa Receives Praise From Japanese Automotive Journalists

Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ: GNTX), a supplier of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and camera-based active-safety systems to the worldwide automotive industry, announced that its interior auto-dimming rearview mirror with Rear Camera Display (RCD) for the Daihatsu Mira Cocoa was recognized by the Automotive Researchers' & Journalists' Conference of Japan (RJC) as one of the top-six new technologies in the 2010 RJC Technology of the Year awards program.

In addition to automatically detecting and eliminating dangerous headlamp glare from rearward approaching vehicles, the Gentex RCD mirror makes backing up safer and easier. When the vehicle is shifted into "reverse," a liquid crystal display (LCD) appears through the mirror's reflective surface and provides a view of the area directly behind the vehicle. The display disappears when the vehicle is shifted into any other gear.

The Gentex RCD Mirror was introduced to the Japan market earlier this year on the Daihatsu Mira Cocoa, a popular micro-minicar designed and appointed to attract younger female car buyers.

According to the Automotive RJC, the Gentex auto-dimming RCD mirror was singled out because it simplifies reversing and parallel parking, especially for younger drivers who may lack confidence driving backwards. The product's smart design and reasonable price were also highly valued.

"The Mira Cocoa was our first program with Daihatsu, so the fact that Japan's Automotive RJC recognizes our RCD mirror's contributions to driver safety, comfort and convenience is particularly gratifying," said Gentex Senior Vice President Enoch Jen.

The Automotive RJC was established in 1991 by prominent professors and journalists to objectively study key automotive issues and recognize important new products and technologies in order to promote the development of sound motorization.

Beautiful European Styling Makes Any RV Interior Unique.

Now, adding this style to a rig is easy with cooktops from Thetford's Sheffield, England subsidiary, Spinflo.

Click Illustration for Larger Image

Developed as alternatives to the industry's standard cooktop designs, the two beautiful models provide RV manufacturers with an upgrade from traditional coach interiors. Both units also present many customization opportunities for OEM distinction and highlight Thetford's dedication to innovation.

The Top Line 920 Series two-burner model offers an elegant appearance and improves on current functionality with the largest burner spread in its class. Horizontal or vertical layouts are available, as well as various base glass colors and knob styles and colors, adding a personalized touch.

Spinflo's other cooktop series, the Top Line Euro 160, is a three-burner model. Offering the same cooking volume as the competition but, in a smaller cutout, it weighs 9-16 lbs. less than traditional cooktops. Bringing European styling to a recessed design, it provides a flush fit to any countertop. This unit also incorporates a glass lid to cover the burners.

The 160 Series allows customization of the glass lid with different colors, including an optional toughened-glass material that allows the lid to double as a work surface. In addition, it can be trimmed in a black or stainless frame.

Gulf Stream Coach, Inc., utilizes the Spinflo Top Line 160 Series on its Crescendo Class A model motorhomes. "We are definitely using Spinflo in our sales pitch," said Dean Crane, Gulf Stream's executive director of corporate training. "We believe including it raises the bar, brings us to another level, in terms of the amenities we offer to retail customers. I've heard nothing but positives about it."

Spinflo also offers sink and oven designs to bring European styling to other areas of an RV's interior. Great for OEMs who are trying to save space and weight, Spinflo ovens are smaller and lighter than the competition.
