Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology announces it has an agreement to supply 48-volt battery cells to Bosch for use in 48-volt battery systems.
Bosch supplies the shoebox-size lithium-ion batteries to an increasing number of manufacturers for use powering multiple functions in hybrid-electric vehicles. Such batteries are often used on hybrids with a combined starter-generator where it can be recharged and provide added torque to vehicle propulsion. Such systems include a direct DC-DC converter to power the vehicles primary 12-volt electrical system.
Bosch estimates that fully one-quarter of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles will be equipped with 48-volt battery systems by 2025.
The rapid development of lithium-ion technology provides vehicle designers to develop systems that are more efficient, affordable and flexible while reducing emissions and fuel consumption, the company says.
The partnership will allow both companies to benefit from joint research and development into lithium-ion batteries and help launch products that meet the needs of different vehicle markets, Bosch says.
