Obama Signs Outdoor REC Act Into Law

Fri Dec 9, 2016

President Barack Obama has signed the Outdoor REC Act into law. This culminates an extraordinary few weeks for the outdoor industry, in which the House and the Senate passed this important legislation with unanimous, bipartisan support that will make sure the outdoor recreation economy is counted as part of U.S. Gross Domestic Product.

The President’s signature represents a major milestone for OIA and its members. In fact, this would not have happened without the strong support of the member companies. The Outdoor Industries has released a statement thanking its members for being engaged and staying engaged. The members' voices will be even more important in the next few years.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis GDP statistics include activity generated by outdoor recreation. What BEA and its partners will do for the very first time with this new project is measure the impact outdoor recreation has on the overall U.S. economy and offer detailed economic statistics not currently available.
