SHIPSHEWANA, Indiana - The auction and flea market business that helped build this small community into a national tourist mecca is diversifying as market conditions change.
Shipshewana Trading Place, which dates to 1922, is the corporation that operates the Shipshewana Auction & Flea Markets. While that famous venue will stay the same in the coming year, the company has closed its antique mall and will rent the space for community events and use it for specialty antique auctions. In addition, the center will be used for an indoor flea market with about 80 of the vendors from the spring and summer outdoor flea market moving indoors October through Dec. 16, 2017, on Fridays and Saturdays.
The space is adjacent to the Expo Barn, which hosts many outdoor events. In addition, the company’s new recreational-vehicle service center opened a few weeks ago. That center is next to the company’s Shipshewana RV Park, which will be expanded by 94 full-hookup spaces.
