The RV Absorption Refrigeration course, an online program run by Northampton Community College and the Pennsylvania RV and Camping Association, will be March 19 through April 15. Course materials are supported by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, and the program allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of recreation vehicle maintenance with intensive, competency-based instruction.
Students log on to access the lecture notes, hands-on assignments and quizzes and also can chat with the instructor and other students. The program gives students the flexibility to complete the course from the comfort of their homes or dealerships without incurring the expense of traveling to a training facility.
The program is approved by RVIA and qualifies for recertification hours. Students receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course. The program is designed for RV maintenance and sales personnel, service managers, factory field technicians, service representatives, inspectors and those seeking a new, hands-on career in a growing industry.
Students who complete the entire program will earn a specialized diploma from Northampton Community College. Students not wishing to obtain the specialized diploma can enroll in individual courses as desired. Those who earn the specialized diploma will be prepared to take RVIA's RV Service Technician or a Master Certified RV Service Technician tests.

Description: This is the appliance that causes the most confusion; how to use heat to make cold. The theory of absorption and associated processes are fine-tuned and presented in a way that makes this often perplexing device a little easier to understand. Like the other LP appliances studied, individual component testing and replacement is accomplished, as well as an understanding of all operational ills on each energy source employed by the RV refrigerator. After successful completion of this course the student will effectively be able to:
• Recognize various styles and refrigerator manufacturers.
• Interpret data plate information.
• Recognize component parts found in manual and automatic refrigerators.
• Explain the function of component parts.
• Locate all component parts within the system.
• Explain how the system functions.
• Explain importance of proper leveling.
• Determine venting according manufacturer specifications.
• Insure all electrical and LP requirements have been met.
• Explain cooling unit composition and operation.
• Set up a cooling unit for proper testing.
• Remove and reinstall different styles of cooling units.
• Diagnose all cooling unit faults.
• Check refrigerator installations for proper clearances.
• Demonstrate the ability to perform necessary mathematical, measurement and geometric functions.
• Insure refrigerator installations conform to code requirements.
• Verify door seals for tightness.
• Explain and diagram how vapor flows through the main and bypass portion of the thermostat on manual refrigerators.
• Conduct performance tests to determine refrigerator status.
• Identify and repair electrical and LP related faults.
• Test the safety valve and thermocouple.
• Explain operation of an automatic (two-way and three-way) refrigerator.
• Perform a check on the ignition module of an automatic refrigerator.
• Test the propane solenoid for proper operation.
• Demonstrate the proper procedures for a thorough Clean & Service.
• Use wiring diagrams and schematics to verify wiring installation.
• Diagnose probable causes for common complaints.
• Diagnose circuit boards.
• Explain operation of humidity control systems.
• Explain the operation of ice makers and water hook-ups.
