The U.S. Honor Flag was a gift to former U.S. Army Sgt. Chris Heisler by the Texas House of Representatives following the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. After a widow of one of the first responders asked it be made into a public memento, Heisler founded The Honor Network, which is dedicated to caring and displaying the Honor Flag. The Honor Flag has already travelled an estimated 7 million miles, including being carried by the space shuttle Atlantis on the final NASA shuttle program mission to the International Space Station in 2011.

Heisler has personally travelled with the flag for most of its travels. Heisler enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 34 and took the flag with him during his deployment to Iraq in 2003. The Honor Network carries the Honor Flag for appearances across the country to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
