Jayco Homecoming 2017

First Day of Jayco Homecoming Centered on Solar Eclipse
by David Rozansky - RV News Senior Writer
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nashville is abuzz with talk of the eclipse. Today in the early afternoon, there will be a total eclipse of the sun. It is billed as The Great American Eclipse. The path of the total solar eclipse will cross the country in a narrow band. Campgrounds and parks will be crowded all along the path, a notable event that has been touted as a great boon for the RV industry as RVers take to the roads to see this once in a lifetime event.

The largest city that will experience Monday's totality is Nashville, Tennessee. This day before the eclipse, visitors are settling in. A crush of tourists moves in slow waves past the glitzy honkytonks of Broadway, and a line stretches down the block at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum. The crooning of bar musicians belting out country music - of various quality - tries to drown out the hawker's shouts on the corners who pitch ring-of-fire T-shirts. There is not a pair of eclipse glasses to be found anywhere. The August heat bears down, making everyone sweat. There is no escape from the sun, as though in defiance of the moon's relentless approach.

This is the venue of the Jayco Dealer Homecoming for 2017.

The trailers appear teasingly in the windows of the convention center across the street from the homecoming's selected hotel. Early check in to the dealer event was easy, simple. A hall pass, and a 12-page program, are all that attendees receive on this day before the show, with a promise of eclipse glasses inside the convention hall at the Music City Center.

Jayco held the early registration for the 2017 Jayco Dealer Homecoming dealer show at the Westin Nashville hotel, across the street from Nashville's Music City Center convention center where the show will take place. Glimpses of RVs appeared through the convention hall windows as arriving Jayco dealers checked in to the hotel and collected their show passes and programs for the show. The show will be held Monday, Aug. 21 through Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Temperatures on the street soared above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and a crush of crowds pushed through the city's tourism district of honkytonks and souvenir shops. The city has swelled with visitors who have come to watch the solar eclipse reach totality.

The eclipse will occur in the middle of the dealer show's first day, and Jayco announced the company has procured eclipse glasses for all show attendees. Time is allotted in the show schedule for attendees to view the eclipse. The keynote presentation and the awards ceremony for top dealers is scheduled for after the gala homecoming dinner Monday night.

Program for Monday, Aug. 21

The displays and sales conferences open at 8 a.m. Monday. Other than the small manner of a total eclipse of the sun, little else is planned for the day. In the evening, however, Jayco will hold its opening ceremonies in the convention hall. A gala dinner is planned for the attending dealers, followed by a keynote presentation by Jayco President and CEO Derald Bontrager, and the awards ceremony for the top-selling Jayco dealers.

Jayco dealers and their significant others, gathered in the hotel bar in the lobby of the Westin Nashville hotel from about 5 p.m. on into the night. The conversation generally centered on the highlights of the Jayco golf tournament that took place that morning, and on the heat. Many had taken a short walk earlier to find lunch, and many commiserated it had been a long, hot walk to the restaurants on Broadway, and it had been more than an hour's wait, if seats at popular lunch spots could be had at all.

All around the room, talk of the eclipse eclipsed the talk of the show to come.
