Black Book: Big Spike in Wholesale RV Values This Month

Wholesale RV values hit an all time high this past month, according to Black Book’s monthly analysis of the used RV market.

The average selling price for motorized units climbed to $51,574 in June, up more than 9.0% from the May mark. Motorhome value hit a similar peak in Dec. 2019, according to Black Book, but this June 2020 spike is the highest the analysts show since 2016.

Black Book’s reports on wholesale RV values the past few months show a rapid spike in motorhome and travel trailer value following a sharp dip during March, due to the coronavirus pandemic. In June, the value of used motorhomes and trailers appear higher than they have been since Jan. 2016.

“RV dealers are still reporting brisk sales of both new and used units,” said Eric Lawrence, principal analyst for Black Book specialty markets. “Their biggest complaint remains a lack of inventory, due to a drop off in trade ins from the increased number of first-time buyers, a lower supply of units at auctions, and the delayed delivery of previously ordered new units. These factors have combined to push the prices of RVs sold at wholesale auctions to all-time highs.”

Towable values also hit a new high this past month. Average trailer and fifth wheel value came in at $18,331, up 4.7% from last month.  One year ago, the average motor home sold for $49,667 and the average towable unit brought $14,840.

Auction volume was mixed during June, however, as motor homes declined 8.9% while towables were unchanged. The average age of both towable and motorized units was seven years old, or 2013 models.
