Former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum was sworn in Saturday as the Secretary of the Interior.

The Senate confirmed Burgum on Jan. 30 by a 79-18 vote.

Burgum said he was grateful to President Donald Trump for the honor to serve as the country’s Interior Secretary.

“We look forward to delivering on President Trump’s vision for energy dominance, which is the foundation of American prosperity, affordability for American families, unrivaled national security and world peace,” Burgum said. “We will achieve energy dominance by sustainably developing our natural resources while championing clean air and clean water, protecting our most beautiful lands and expanding outdoor recreation. We will strengthen our mission of enhancing the quality of life, promoting economic opportunities, and empowering our Tribal partners through mutual respect, open communication, collaboration and a sincere willingness to listen.”

Burgum’s nomination was supported by RVIA and the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR). As North Dakota governor, Burgum recently established North Dakota’s Office of Outdoor Recreation after participating in ORR’s National Outdoor Recreation Executive Forum.

ORR said Burgum demonstrated a commitment to outdoor recreation through economic innovation.

The roundtable wrote in a letter to congressional members, “We are confident that Gov. Burgum will provide the leadership needed to address the challenges ahead and foster a sustainable and thriving outdoor recreation economy for all Americans.”
