Countries Put Tariffs on Hold

Calls on Monday between President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resulted in a 30-day pause on tariffs and retaliatory tariffs between the countries.

Trump issued orders Saturday to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which were set to take effect today. Instead, the tariffs will be delayed to give the U.S. time to negotiate with Canadian and Mexican representatives.

The U.S. president talked early Monday with Sheinbaum and agreed to pause initiating tariffs after the Mexican president agreed to send 10,000 National Guard members to the border. The additional staffing would help Mexico address drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, a late afternoon call with Trudeau and Trump also yielded the month-long pause. Canada committed to moving forward with a $1.3 billion border plan approved for months. The country also agreed to appoint a fentanyl czar and to back an intelligence directive on organized crime and drugs with $200 million, among other things.

The Canadian RV Association on Tuesday morning expressed its appreciation to the U.S. and Canadian administrations for deciding to work toward a resolution.

“We strongly support these continued discussions,” CRVA said, “to ensure that fair trade policies can remain in place to benefit businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.”

CRVA said trade barriers would significantly affect consumers, limit product availability and reduce competitiveness in the industry.

“We are optimistic that governments will use this extension period productively to explore equitable solutions that address the concerns of the U.S. and Canada,” CRVA said. “The CRVA remains committed to working with our industry partners, policymakers and stakeholders to ensure that the interests of RV manufacturers, dealers and owners are represented in any future trade negotiations.”

After Trump’s order Saturday, Canada responded by announcing $30 billion in retaliatory tariffs set to take effect Tuesday.

Before the Canada-U.S. pause, RVDA of Canada announced a special webinar to address tariff questions and concerns.

The webinar is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Pacific time Thursday. Presenters include RVDA of Canada President Eleonore Hamm, Canadian RV Association President Shane Devenish and Charles Bernard, the lead economist at Impact Public Affairs.
