The Dyrt, an online camping platform providing information on campsites, released its 2025 camping report this week. Toyota Trucks sponsored the report for the second consecutive year.

The report includes survey results compiled from The Dyrt members, a sample of U.S. residents and camping property managers across all 50 states.

According to the findings, 81.1 million Americans camped in 2024, with 5.8 million first-timers. Since 2021, more than 25 million Americans have gone camping for the first time.

The report found more than half (53.4%) of consumers who camp said their preferred type of camping involved a vehicle such as an RV, trailer or camper van.

Toyota Motor North America Senior Media Analyst Kaylea Spurgin said, “The real start of every camping trip is the moment you get out on the road. It can be a simple family weekend getaway or a solo cross-country road trip, but either way people need a vehicle they can depend on.”

The survey reported nearly half of consumers who camp own a trailer (49.6%). A third of consumers who camp (32.6%) own an RV with an additional 20.3% owning a camper van. Just over half of respondents said they bought an RV or trailer in the past five years, with RVers saying the average amount spent on their RV was $58,331.

Consumers over the age of 55 most often listed RVing as their primary type of camping. The survey reported 61% of consumers who camp over 55 listed an RV or trailer as their primary camping type. The total was 50% higher than the overall average.

Consumers over 55 reported higher net worth than other age groups. Consumers over 55 were twice as likely to have a net worth over $750,000 and four times more likely to have a net worth over $2 million.

Solo consumers who camp were less likely to prefer RVing, with 17.3% of respondents choosing RVing compared with 45.1% overall. Solo consumers who camp said they preferred camper vans, overlanding, truck camping and tents when camping.

Farm campers—consumers who are conducting their camping on farms or land areas such as Harvest Hosts—said they preferred RVing and trailers more than the average consumer who camps. Over half (51.4%) reported preferences for RVs with an additional 13.6% preferring camper vans.

The survey reported that camper vans are especially popular among people who visit national parks, enjoy free camping and live on the West Coast.
