RVIA Board Approves 2028 Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems Requirement

Standards Steering Committee

RVIA’s Board of Directors approved a motion last month implementing a requirement for tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS). The TPMS must be included on all towable RVs at the start of each manufacturer’s respective model year 2028 production.

RVIA’s Standards Steering Committee (SSC) previously approved public inputs regarding TPMS for the 2029 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1192 Standard for RVs.

The requirement will take effect eight years after Truck Systems Technologies, now TST by PSI, a Clarience Technologies Co., secured what is believed to be the first OE TPMS deal with Forest River’s Palomino Columbus brand.

The SSC’s recommendation for early TPMS adoption is for towable products with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) under 26,000 pounds.

“Rather than establish a single, uniform enforcement date applicable to the entire industry,” an RVIA spokesperson said, “the SSC and the Standards and Inspection Departments agree that having each manufacturer implement TPMS installation at the start of their respective (model year) 2028 production process will ensure that all units in that model year are so equipped.”

RVIA inspectors will be able to accurately review compliance by monitoring VIN numbers during inspections and maintaining clear communication with manufacturer members regarding model-year changeovers.

The SSC’s definition of TPMS, per the 2029 NFPA Edition 1192 Standard, is:

  • A tire pressure system fitted to a vehicle which (1) senses pressure directly or indirectly, or able to evaluate the variation of pressure over time, (2) does not restore the measured pressure to its specified level, and (3) signals when the threshold(s) has (have) been exceeded and passes this information along to the driver.
