Fast Company deemed Thor Industries’ hybrid-electric RV as a “World Changing Idea” for 2025.
The prototype, built in collaboration with Harbinger Motors and introduced as a test vehicle in 2024, is a Type A motorhome. The RV operates like a regular electric vehicle, but adds a gas generator to charge the RV’s batteries.
“The RV delivers 500 miles of range with the generator—almost double the average range of America’s small EVs,” Fast Company said. “Once it arrives at a destination, it can charge at campsite hookups and run its amenities off-grid.”
McKay Featherstone, senior vice president of global innovation at Thor Industries, said, building a hybrid option enabled the manufacturer to extend the vehicle range.
“The generator can provide electricity so you can go further down the road,” he said, “or so you can stay at the campsite longer.”
Harbinger helped Thor modify an existing electric chassis design into a hybrid model tailored to the RV’s dimensions. The chassis is a series powertrain, meaning all the energy used by the vehicle comes from the RV’s 800-volt lithium-ion batteries.
Fast Company launched in 1995 and is a business media brand with an editorial focus on innovation in technology, leadership, world-changing ideas, creativity and design.
