Days after the U.S. and China agreed to lower tariffs on each other’s imported goods for 90 days, President Donald Trump signed an executive order lowering tariffs on Chinese imports previously subject to a de minimis exemption.
Tariffs on Chinese imports valued at $800 or less increased May 2 to 120%. If the product was sent via international postal service, the tariff on the product valued at $800 or less totaled $100.
The new executive order lowers the tariff to 54%. The international postal service charge remains $100 but will not increase to $200 on June 1, as originally planned.
The tariff changes took effect Wednesday morning.
The de minimis exemption from imported products valued at $800 or less remains in place for countries other than China and Hong Kong.
