After average gas prices reached their highest levels since 2014, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported national average regular gasoline prices flat in the week ending Aug. 16 from the previous week.

Average prices totaled $3.17 a gallon for the second consecutive week. The level is still $1 a gallon higher than the same week a year ago.

Average diesel prices fell nearly a penny to $3.36 a gallon. Diesel prices are 92.9 cents a gallon higher than they were in the same week a year ago.

AAA stated gas demand and supply increased last week, according to EIA data. The group said the information signaled summer gas demand is likely softening as the school year starts and concerns about transmission of COVID-19 grow as infection rates continue to increase.
