Brown and Brown Inc. said it is with “profound sadness” that the company shared news of Chief Legal Officer Robert Mathis’s passing.

Brown and Brown President and CEO Powell Brown said Mathis was a great friend and teammate, a dynamic leader and an exceptional attorney with a keen legal mind.

“Rob set the standard for judgment, integrity and humanity,” Brown said. “He helped guide our company through pivotal moments with a rare combination of legal excellence and genuine kindness. We will miss his counsel, his friendship and his example. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.”

The company said Mathis brought clarity to complex situations and steadiness to challenging moments.

Mathis joined Brown and Brown in 2023. He amassed a three-decade-long legal career.

The company said, “His impact on our organization and on all who had the privilege to work alongside him is immeasurable.”

Brown & Brown said Eileen Akerson will serve as the company’s interim chief legal officer. Akerson had been Brown & Brown’s chief risk, regulatory and compliance counsel.
