Jon Kay started working at a Tacoma, Washington hitch and tow shop in 1958, inspiring him to someday open his own: Torklift International.

In 1976, Kay opened Torklift Central Welding in Kent, Washington, and began making his own product line. By 1990, he had launched his first product, True Frame-Mounted Tie Downs.

Torklift Central Welding bought its first CNC plasma cutter in 1995, which helped the supplier to continually develop new products. Four years later, Kay started Torklift International. Torklift Central Welding exists today and operates as a separate company. The same year it started, Torklift International shipped its first SuperHitch and SuperTruss towing products.

New products followed in 2003, when Torklift invented its FastGun, the first turnbuckle of its kind with a quick disconnect handle. The SuperHitch line was expanded to the SuperHitch Magnum line in 2008.
