KOA’s February 2022 Monthly Research Report found the number of campers remained constant the past two months. As the spring season begins in March and April, KOA’s report stated numbers are expected to rise.

More than half of campers (54%) say they made some or all of their 2022 reservations, the report stated. Three-fourths of campers (75%) view camping as a travel option with “natural social distancing.” A similar proportion (73%) stated camping enables them to travel more often. Above all, one-third of campers (33%) indicate that, if not for camping, they would not travel at all.

“These results show how camping has remained resilient throughout the pandemic,” the report stated, “and provided both experienced campers as well as converted leisure travelers a way to get out and experience the outdoors and visit their favorite destinations.”

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of campers surveyed said they did not cancel plans for February through April. Of the 20% who either canceled or planned to cancel, 41% said Covid concerns were behind the cancellation, with an additional 41% saying the weather was the reason.

Of those surveyed who plan to camp from February through April, 37% said Covid would not impact travel plans. Respondents changing trip dates or delaying trips totaled 32%.
