Lippert Components Inc. released a new Somnum brand mattress the supplier says is fully recyclable and ecofriendly.

The EnviroSpring mattress features a fully biodegradable core. Taken directly to a landfill, the core will naturally decompose within two years, Lippert stated.

The supplier said the mattress provides exceptional sleep design and benefits and a zero-waste solution for colleges and universities, boarding schools and other organizations with residential facilities.

“Many colleges and universities are struggling to find recycling options for their mattresses, so they are seeking an environmentally friendly solution,” said Mike Padrnos, Somnum Development Manager. “The EnviroSpring biodegradable core is better than being recyclable, it is landfill friendly.”

The anaerobic (oxygen free) soils afforded in landfills promote an accelerated biodegradation of the mattress’ special foam core, Lippert stated. Independent laboratory tests found up to 40% of biodegradation was achieved within the first 120 days with microbe-rich conditions, with the remainder of the core decomposing within a few years.

“We are excited to partner with Lippert to place their EnviroSpring mattresses at Texas A&M,” stated Brandon Carlson, Residence Hall Coordinator at Texas A&M University. “The product itself is high quality, comfortable, sustainably manufactured and provides our students with an opportunity to learn more about closed-loop products.”

The exclusive EnviroSpring core passes ASTM D-5511 standards for biodegradability, Lippert stated. Additional EnviroSpring features include:

  • Flanked with cushioning fiber toppers (recyclable)
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Mold and mildew resistant
  • Firm support on either side
  • Lightweight design that is only half the weight of a standard collegiate innerspring mattress
  • Finished in fiber laminated DURABLU® Performance Sport Nylon with inverted seams (recyclable)
  • Five-year warranty
