In the ever-evolving landscape of energy storage, lithium batteries have emerged as a game-changer, revolutionizing the way we power our lives. From smartphones to electric vehicles, these batteries have become an integral part of our daily existence.

However, in the RV market, myths and misconceptions remain surrounding lithium batteries, particularly the LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) type lithium batteries and cylindrical cells.

Today, I aim to shed light on some of these myths and emphasize these exceptional power sources’ often-overlooked benefits.

My name is Brian Schaffner. I am the CEO of Expion360. I have enjoyed the benefits and joy of outdoor recreation since buying my first boat at age 15, making memorial moments with family and friends in the great outdoors.

Expion360 is a lithium battery designer and manufacturer. Our company specializes in lithium-integrated power system solutions and is located in Redmond, Oregon. I joined Expion360 in 2020 and became CEO in early 2023.

I love working in this industry and for our company, because nothing competes with the freedom and peace you can experience when you truly “get away from it all.” Our industry has made great strides in the past few years to shift from lead-acid batteries to lithium.

Here, we will dispel some lithium battery myths and explore how these exceptional power sources’ provide often-overlooked benefits.

Myth 1: Lithium Batteries Are Unstable and Fire Prone

Among the most prevalent myths about lithium batteries is their susceptibility to thermal runaway, leading to catastrophic fires.

Certain lithium chemistries have exhibited such risks, it is true. However, differentiating between the various lithium battery types is essential.

LiFePO4 batteries contain iron phosphate as a key component. The battery’s chemistry is known for its superior thermal stability, making LiFePO4 batteries among the safest options available.

As an example, numerous EV manufacturers use either NCM or NMA chemistry lithium cells. Both these battery types have a high potential for thermal runaway. Manufacturers using NCM or NMA batteries are required to build the cells into very complex packs with heating and cooling lines running through the pack. Because of the packs and cooling lines, the NCM or NMA lithium cells cost more to manufacture. Additionally, the spent batteries are more costly and burdensome to recycle.

In the RV market, safety is paramount. LiFePO4 batteries have a significantly lower risk of overheating and catching fire compared with other lithium chemistries. LiFePO4 batteries’ inherent safety feature provides peace of mind for RV owners, enabling them to enjoy their journeys without concerns about battery safety.

Myth 2: Lithium Batteries Are Too Expensive

Another common misconception is that lithium batteries, especially LiFePO4 variants, are prohibitively expensive for use in the RV market.

Although the initial lithium battery cost can be higher than traditional lead-acid batteries, considering the bigger picture is crucial.

Compared with lead-acid batteries, LiFePO4 batteries offer a substantially longer life span. They can last up up to 10 times longer. This means fewer replacements over the RV’s life. Fewer replacements reduce total ownership cost and minimize the hassle of constantly swapping out batteries during travels.

Lithium batteries also provide higher energy density, meaning you can store more power in less space. Where space is at a premium, storing more power in less space can be particularly advantageous. With LiFePO4 batteries, you can free up valuable storage space while enjoying longer-lasting power. Often, lithium batteries have a higher energy density and charge faster, saving time during the recharging process.

Myth 3: Cylindrical Cells Are Inferior

Within the RV market, some companies have displayed a preference for prismatic lithium battery cells, or rectangular box cells, over cylindrical cells.

Some believe prismatic cells are more stable or better suited to the RV environment. This belief is not necessarily true.

Prismatic cells have their merits. Their cells are larger than cylindrical cells and have fewer connections, so prismatic cells enable larger capacities.

Cylindrical cells, especially high-quality 26650 cells, should not be dismissed. Cylindrical cells have distinct advantages, and ones particularly relevant to the RV industry:

Robustness: Cylindrical cells are durable and resistant to physical stress. Their durability is crucial in the RV market, where vehicles can encounter bumpy roads and vibrations.

Modularity: Cylindrical cells are inherently modular. They can be arranged easily and provide flexible battery pack configurations to meet specific space requirements while maintaining energy storage needs.

Proven: Cylindrical cells have been widely adopted in various industries, including electric vehicles and consumer electronics, proving their reliability and safety.

By leveraging cylindrical cells’ advantages, RV manufacturers can provide their customers with efficient and robust power systems. At Expion360, we believe that cylindrical cells, when integrated correctly, can offer RV owners a dependable and versatile energy storage solution.

RV Benefits of LiFePO4 Lithium Batteries

Now that we have addressed some common myths, let’s explore the often-overlooked RV market benefits of LiFePO4 lithium batteries:

Exceptional Cycle Life: LiFePO4 batteries are renowned for their long cycle life. Expion360 batteries, for example, are rated at 3,000-5,000 charging cycles. The charging cycle life span is 10 times that of a lead-acid battery’s. LiFePO4 batteries can endure years of heavy usage without significant performance degradation. The result makes them ideal for RVs that may undergo frequent discharging and recharging.

Lightweight: LiFePO4 batteries are significantly lighter than traditional lead-acid batteries. LiFePO4 batteries’ weight reduction contributes to improved fuel efficiency when towing RVs and provides greater cargo capacity.

Fast Charging: LiFePO4 batteries can be charged rapidly, reducing downtime and enabling consumers to get back on the road.

Steady Voltage Output: LiFePO4 batteries maintain a consistent voltage throughout their discharge cycle. The constant voltage ensures the RV’s electrical systems operate efficiently.

Deep Discharge Capability: LiFePO4 batteries can discharge to a much lower state of charge without harm compared with lead-acid batteries. The difference means LiFePO4 batteries can continue to be used longer without needing to recharge, providing more power to consumers with each charge.

Longer Warranty: All the benefits, including longevity, faster recovery and extended life cycles, enable manufacturers to provide longer warranty protection compared with lead-acid batteries. In the case of Expion360, our LiFePO4 batteries carry a warranty of up to 12 years.

The Future of RV Power

As we navigate the exciting RV market terrain, embracing advancements in energy storage technology is essential.

LiFePO4 lithium batteries, particularly those using cylindrical cells, have an unparalleled combination of safety, longevity, efficiency and flexibility.

Additionally, Expion360 is continuing to improve the cylindrical cells’ energy density to achieve better performing lithium batteries. The majority of the industry uses 26650 cells in either 2.8-amp-hour or 3.4-amp-hour capacities.

Expion360 is offering cylindrical lithium batteries at much higher energy densities. Their 4.0-amp-hour and 4.5-amp-hour cylindrical cells are among the most energy-dense industry options.

We believe these batteries will power the RV industry’s future. Our mission is to provide RV manufacturers and enthusiasts with the most reliable, efficient and safe energy storage solutions available.

As we dispel the myths and uncover the truths about LiFePO4 lithium batteries, we invite you to explore the possibilities they offer for enhancing your RV adventures.
