The Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) took a stance on climate change.
On Wednesday, the Senate Budget Committee held a hearing on “Recreation Risk: The Nature of Climate Costs.”
NEMO Equipment Director of Government Affairs Theresa McKenney requested congressional support on America’s Outdoor Recreation Act (AORA) and the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act, which invests in outdoor recreation infrastructure.
Committee members and witnesses highlighted climate change impacts including economic losses, long-term public health and infrastructure effects.
ORR President Jessica Wahl Turner said, “We appreciate Congress acknowledging these challenges so we can work together on innovative solutions to ensure outdoor recreation can continue to support healthy people, places and the planet.”
According to ORR, the meeting yielded a need for a collective approach to mitigating impacts and ensuring outdoor recreation sustainability. ORR said the association is ready to collaborate with Congress, stakeholders and the public to craft policies safeguarding natural resources and sustaining economic growth.
