Dragonfly Energy Manufacturing Method Reduces Battery Toxins

Dragonfly Energy Holdings Corp. developed a method to reduce toxic chemicals used to make batteries. Dragonfly discovered a method to build lithium batteries without per- and polyfluroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS chemicals typically are used in lithium battery production.

The chemicals resist grease, oil, water and heat. They degrade slowly and contaminate air, water and soil. The highly regulated chemicals are also in various consumer, commercial and industrial products.

PFAS are often found in battery components, from electrolytes to electrode binders. Dragonfly used its dry electrode battery manufacturing process to create a lithium cell without using PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.”

Dragonfly Energy CEO Denis Phares said, “By successfully demonstrating the removal of persistent forever chemicals from lithium battery cells, we believe we are well-positioned to address a critical challenge facing the future of energy storage.”

According to Dragonfly, its dry electrode battery manufacturing process has a 9% smaller carbon footprint compared with conventional manufacturing methods. The process saves 25% of the energy that conventional manufacturing processes use.

Dragonfly said the company is interested in collaborating with other companies to provide battery cells through this process.

The company said the breakthrough positions Dragonfly as a leader in the evolving battery production landscape.
