RVIA revealed that its Standards Steering Committee recently recommended that the Board of Directors temporarily delay enforcing new requirements on grounding monitor interrupter (GMI) installations.
Last week, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the recommendation. As a result, a requirement scheduled to take effect Jan. 1 will likely occur in June 2027 instead.
RVIA said a lack of available, fully developed, listed GMIs made compliance unrealistic.
The requirement is part of the 2023 and 2026 editions of the National Electric Code (NEC) Article 551. The code requires all RVs with 30-amp or 50-amp electrical service to install a GMI.
The Standards Steering Committee will monitor GMIs’ availability and make a recommendation to the board before its March meeting.
RVIA said the committee will likely recommend that enforcement begin with the start of model year 2028, or approximately June 1, 2027.
During the board meeting, two other RV standards motions were approved.
One motion was related to the 2026 edition of the NFPA 1192 Standard on RVs and the 2025 edition of ANSI/RVIA Standard for DC Voltage Systems in RVs. The motion adopted a June 1, 2026, effective date and Sept. 1, 2026, enforcement date for the standards.
A motion for he 2026 NEC effective date of June 1, 2026, and enforcement date of Sept. 1, 2026, was also adopted, except for Article 551.40(D).
