Senate RV Caucus Chairman Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) was able to joke Thursday about a potentially serious health threat.

During a luncheon Ernst hosted for Republican senators, Ernst reportedly choked on some of the food, which included a rib-eye steak, pork chops and corn.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, an ophthalmologist who completed a general surgery internship after graduating from Duke Medical School, stepped in to perform the Heimlich maneuver and dislodge the food.

Ernst joked about the incident later on the social media site X, saying, “Can’t help but choke on the woke policies Dems are forcing down our throats. Thanks Dr. Rand Paul!”

Ernst joined the Senate RV Caucus in 2015 as co-chairman, along with then-Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.). When Donnelly lost his Senate race in 2018 to Republican Mike Braun, Ernst became the sole Senate RV Caucus chairman.
