Campground Pedestals Require New Features in 2026

While only a month of 2025 has passed, RVIA is reminding industry participants about 2023 regulatory changes taking effect in the fall of 2026.

The National Electrical Code’s 2023 update includes a requirement to install ground monitoring interrupters (GMIs) on RV pedestals. GMIs provide a safety layer to RV pedestals by monitoring the pedestal’s grounding connection before allowing shore power into an RV. If the GMI detects an issue, it will cut off power.

Enforcement of the GMI installation was delayed until July 2026 but actual enforcement is expected to begin in the fall after the current National Fire Protection Association standard publication is adopted.

Damaged or misused shore cords and pedestal receptacles can cause electrical shock and equipment damage. GMIs’ presence could prevent this.

With over a year and a half before the requirement sets in, campground owners have time to prepare. RVIA suggested campground owners complete the following practices to prepare:

  • Partner with qualified electricians: According to the association, an electrical infrastructure assessment is crucial. The assessment reviews transformers, distribution panels, breakers and pedestals.
  • Prioritize regular maintenance: RVIA recommended having a routine maintenance plan. The plan includes testing connections and ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) in addition to inspecting wiring and equipment.
  • Consider environmental factors: Weather conditions can affect electrical systems. According to RVIA, underground systems provide better weather protection compared with above ground systems. Underground systems require more maintenance.
  • Plan for increased power demands: RVIA recommended ensuring campground systems can handle growing power needs in modern RVs.
