EXCLUSIVE: Airstream Debuts its Lightest Trailer Yet

Airstream’s latest trailer, the World Traveler 22RB, is the manufacturer’s lightest towable in its lineup.

Airstream’s latest trailer, the World Traveler 22RB, is the manufacturer’s lightest towable in its lineup.

Airstream Vice President of Sales Josh Fonner said the company had specific goals when designing the new trailer.

“One of the targets, from a manufacturing perspective,” Fonner said, “was to really have a unit that we could sell globally.”

Fonner said the World Traveler’s international version is roughly 95% similar to the new domestic version. Fewer changes to each trailer mean easier access to international markets.

“From our side, that was a big interest piece,” Fonner said. “For the consumer side, we were targeting something that was both kind of an entry price point and entry weight into Airstream.”

The Airstream entry price point is an MSRP of approximately $68,000.

Previously, Airstream’s lightest offering was a 16-foot trailer with a 5,000-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). The 22-foot-long World Traveler has a 4,500-pound GVWR.

To pull off the lower GVWR, Fonner said Airstream needed design ingenuity and a little magic.

“It is magic…the magic of aluminum and Airstream,” Fonner said. “In all seriousness, we really took a pretty hard look at materials in the unit—what needs to be in the unit, what is the overall structure of the unit—starting from the top down.”

Panoramic glass windows in the trailer’s front were swapped for lighter acrylic. Overhead locker doors made from pressed felt reduced weight. The World Traveler is also a 7.5-foot-wide RV compared with typical 8-foot-wide Airstream models.

“We go to a 7-foot, 6-inch-wide shell here, so it loses about 6 inches in width,” Fonner said, “but really lowers the weight overall.”

An under-bed-mounted unit replaced the traditional roof-mounted AC.

“We kind of removed everything off of the roof of this unit,” Fonner said. “We have flush-mounted solar panels on the roof.”

Removing the AC and flush-mounting the solar panels increased the RV’s aerodynamics and towability.

The lower 450-pound tongue weight enables the World Traveler to be towed by various lightweight pickups, crossovers and SUVs.

The World Traveler features a unique floorplan. The 22-foot Bambi and 22-foot Caravel share similar floorplans, but the World Traveler features an all-new layout.

Among the biggest changes is the bedroom. The Airstream Bambi 22FB features a 54-inch-by-80-inch east-to-west bed in the trailer’s front. The World Traveler layout is different.

“When you go to the World Traveler, you have a rear-mounted bed that is hinged on both sides, so you can move the bed frame up to be able to access storage underneath,” Fonner said. “It is almost like twin beds on each side, with the goal being that people could rotate and drop their feet right to the floor, kind of removing that need to hop over a partner.”

The World Travel’s rear, V-shaped twin sleeping area features an 80-inch-by-80-inch bed. In the front, a dinette with three different configurations sleeps two.

Airstream’s latest trailer, the World Traveler 22RB, is the manufacturer’s lightest towable in its lineup.

“You have a dinette that sits up in the traditional position. You can also drop that dinette down into a bed position,” Fonner said. “You can also rotate the cushions that sit behind you against the front of the unit as well. So, it makes kind of a deep sofa setup.”

The three-piece dry bath and integrated storage are opposite the galley.

The kitchen features a 12-volt refrigerator, a two-burner gas cooktop, an optional microwave, and meal-prep space.

“I owned a 22-foot Bambi for about a decade, and I cannot believe the amount of galley storage in this unit,” Fonner said. “It is a really impressive number of drawers and storage spaces to be able to store all your pantry items.”

Fonner said the 4.1-cubic-foot refrigerator is relatively small, but consumers can add an optional drawer-style refrigerator under the dinette.

“It gives you the option to place drinks and put that underneath, and that is really easily accessible from the entry door,” Fonner said. “That frees up some refrigerator space in the galley area.”

Although Airstream said the RV market is trending towards price increases, the manufacturer is focused on making RVing more accessible.

“In addition to having this global unit that we can really sell to the world, and having something that has a lower weight to be towed by more people,” Fonner said, “we kind of wanted to buck the trend of what was happening in the rest of the RV space and have something that can bring more people into the Airstream family.”

In October 2025, a group of sales professionals visited the Airstream factory for training on selling the new trailer. World Traveler 22RBs arrived on dealer lots in November. The RV made its consumer show debut at the Florida RV SuperShow in Tampa in January.
