Montana Enables Longer RVs on Road

New legislation passed in Montana will enable 46-foot RVs, such as this Dutchmen RV Voltage 4225, to travel on roads in the state. The previous maximum travel trailer length was 40 feet.

Montana’s definitions of “motorhome” and “travel trailer” received updates after the State Senate passed a new bill March 16.

Once signed into law, the allowable maximum travel trailer length in Montana will increase from 40 feet to 46 feet. Additionally, the law no longer will include what RVIA called an “outdated limit” of fewer than 320 square feet gross trailer area.

“We expect the governor to approve HB 83 and for it to become law,” RVIA Senior Manager of Government Affairs Nick Rudowich said. “This is a great result for the RV industry. We are grateful for our in-state partners that worked with us to amend House Bill 83 early in the legislative process. They were a critical component in the success of House Bill 83.”

The new bill will modernize and align Montana statute to reflect current RV industry standards and widely accepted RV dimensions, the association stated. In addition to the increased length provision, HB 83 will update the motorhome definition to reference NFPA 1192: Standard on Recreational Vehicles, as opposed to the existing outdated reference to ANSI A119.2.
