Thor has become the leading Type B manufacturer by market share over the first four months of 2022, Thor Industries announced Wednesday in its earnings release.

The Type B category has been dominated by Winnebago Industries for years. According to Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI), in 2019, Winnebago claimed a 39% market share to 7.6% for Thor. In 2021, Winnebago had 45.5% of the overall market share to 21% for Thor.

Over the first four months of 2022, SSI reported Thor with a 40.9% market share and Winnebago with a 33.6% share.

“We have aggressively developed and introduced a comprehensive line of Class B motorhomes across our brands for delivery to our independent dealer network,” said Todd Woelfer, senior vice president and chief operating officer. “We did not have any meaningful share in this segment when we started a few years ago, but according to first-quarter data for calendar 2022 from Statistical Surveys, Inc., we have taken significant market share and are now the No. 1 RV manufacturer within the North American Class B motorhome category.”

Woelfer said the growth was a testament to Thor’s ability to use scale and innovation to quickly grow in a new market segment.

“With this exciting news, as of the end of the quarter, we are now the market share leader in every North American RV product category in which we compete,” Woelfer said.

Thor reported SSI data totaling 2,279 retail registrations in the Type B category for the three-month period ending April 30. The total was a 103.5% increase from the same three-month period in 2021, when Thor registered 1,120 Type B registrations.

Net sales in the category also grew dramatically year-over-year. In the three-month period ending April 30, 2022, Thor reported $242.9 million in Type B net sales. The total was up 122% from the same period in 2021, when Thor reported $109.4 million in Type B net sales.
